abstraction and ambiguity

Brit Andresen described the inherent flaw of photographic representations of architecture as being like trying to describe to someone what it feels like to be in total darkness by showing them a picture of the colour black. Outside of the documentary requirements of commercial photography, project obscura explores representations of architecture that are less definite. The project is an exploration in pictorial abstraction and ambiguity – the images, we hope, won’t merely hit the retina and bounce off, but penetrate the neo-cortex and stir the emotional centres of the brain. In order to describe the feeling of ‘darkness’ we are attempting to describe lightness and every colour in between.
